I congratulate The Argus on its front page report of the unbelievable news that Brighton and Hove City Council's planning subcommittee voted to accept proposals for the waste transfer station next to homes and schools in Hollingdean Lane (The Argus, June 21).
In this decision, where councillors have placed the interests of a giant corporation before the interests of local children and residents, we see fully demonstrated the moral and political bankruptcy of New Labour.
The party, which once could be relied upon to be the champions of the interests (health and education) of children and of Hollingdean residents, has now betrayed them.
There will be an electoral reckoning as a result of this betrayal.
The Conservatives, however, will gain nothing from this because they have been silent on the issue. Is this the new caring conservatism David Cameron has inaugurated?
Only the Green Party has emerged from this community political struggle with any credit, as their members have denounced the waste transfer proposal on environmental, health, social and educational grounds.
After the greatest manifestation of community and democratic action which the city has seen for many decades, there is every possibility further disillusionment with the political process will now result.
But, far more importantly, this ignorant and perverse decision has placed the health and educational welfare of hundreds of young children under serious threat.
