If our Chief Constable insisted police officers wore their hats when on duty in the public eye, he would immediately instill more confidence in the people the police are here to serve.
Traffic Wardens and Police Community Officers do wear their uniform properly, so why does this not apply to constables?
It didn't seem to last night, when I saw an officer talking to a respected member of the community with his hands in his pockets, chewing gum, without his hat on.
The uniform represents an officer's authority and should receive the respect it deserves, especially from those wearing it. With this one easy step, the Chief Constable could help bring us closer to a period when this respect was without question.
