WH Wilson's letter (The Argus, June 14) causes me to wonder how much those who are flying the red cross of St George know about the dragon-slayer's history.
George, also called Giorgio or Joris, was of Middle-Eastern origin and never set foot in England, which shares his patronage with Portugal, Greece and Bavaria.
In 1969, the Roman Catholic church reduced his sainthood status to that of a local cult figure.
Mr Wilson urges Brighton and Hove City Council to remember those who fought for their liberty to fly the flag of their choice on public buildings.
We should also remember the countless thousands who lost their liberty during four centuries of empire-building and slave trading.
St George was, at best, a figure of questionable historicity.
So, although rooting for England's World Cup team, I will not be flying the flag.
