One of Ireland's most recent musical exports, Lunasa are a maverick instrumental outfit comprising five musicians who, over the years, have helped form the backbone of some of their country's most famous groups.
Bassist Trevor Hutchinson was a key member of The Waterboys, and his upright acoustic bass is at the forefront of their sound.
Churning up dynamic live shows with their inventive arrangements and bass-driven grooves, they won the BBC's Folk Album Of The Year award for 2004's The Kinnity Sessions.
Now they have gone back to deconstructing traditional music with new album Se.
"There are lots of great melodies in Irish music but often people don't hear the rhythms underneath," says founding member Sean Smyth.
"We try to relate the swing or energy of the music, using new rhythms, letting each instrument add its own unique layer.
"We'll play the same tune over and over searching for the groove, exploring it.
"We let the music find its pulse."
