The guide offers a critical view of what's hot for the coming week.
The Mojo Fins, Sumo, Middle Street Brighton, Wednesday, June 21
-Having spent the past couple of years steadily progressing from support slots with the likes of Hope of the States, The Ludes and The Veils to their own headline shows, local talents The Mojo Fins are raring to get back on track an untimely broken arm and various virulent bugs have, of late, kept the dynamic four-piece from performing live. But the Fins, who have drawn favourable comparisons with The Thrills, Television and Nick Drake, have not been resting on their laurels. Being holed up indoors for the last few months has been a fruitful if frustrating time. The band have been busy creating plenty of glorious new tracks which they are busting to play. Starts 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5/£4. Call 01273 749465.
The Jamestown Union, Joogleberry Playhouse, Brighton, Thursday, June 22
- This Brighton-based five piece produce heart-warming acoustic folk and bring a contemporary twist to country music, with sweet sentiments set amid the tensions of modern relationships. Together for just over a year, the group have had a great start to their musical career. Their first demo received stacks of attention and ensured they got a fair few high-profile gigs in prestigious venues supporting the likes of Gina Villalobos, Caitlin Cary and Billy Talbot. With an album recorded at Metway Studios and American record labels keeping an eye on them, the future is looking good. Starts 9pm. Tickets cost £5. Call 571400.
Electric Strawbs, Komedia, Gardner Street, Brighton, Thursday, June 22
- One of the British progressive bands of the early Seventies, The Strawbs differed from contemporaries such as The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd in that their sound originated in English folk music rather than rock. Founded in 1964, the band were originally known as the Strawberry Hill Boys and started out as a bluegrass band, eventually moving on to folk rock, glam rock, prog and AOR. Leader and most active songwriter is guitarist and singer Dave Cousins (guitar, dulcimer, banjo, vocals). Players in the past have included Sandy Denny (Fairport Convention) and Rick Wakeman (Yes). Still pulling in the crowds 30 years on, don't miss this electric version of their rocking live show. Starts 8pm. Tickets cost £15. Call 01273 674100.
