One of the stars of lesbian teen drama Sugar Rush has banned her own children from watching it.

Sara Stewart, who plays Kim's mother, has told her pubescent children they are not allowed to watch the show now, or at any time in the future.

Sugar Rush is set in Brighton and inspired by a book written by Hove writer Julie Burchill. But it is not the programme's Sapphic content that has worried the actor.

She is concerned they might be disturbed by the sight of her playing sex-obsessed Stella.

She told a national newspaper: "My own kids don't see it and they won't in future. Sam is 13 and India is 11. One of Sam's friends saw it and he was keen to find out what he was missing.

"But I said, 'If I wasn't in it, I might let you watch it. But on the brink of pubescence, to watch your mother having it off on TV is not psychologically healthy. It could be a scarring experience. These are not images I want you to have'.

At that point he went a bit pale and said, 'You have a point, Mum'. He doesn't want to watch it."

The second series of Sugar Rush begins on Channel 4 tonight at 10.50pm, with the next episode straight after on E4 at 11.15pm.

The story picks up with Maria Sweet, aka Sugar, in a young offenders' institute. The series was filmed at a series of locations in Brighton and Hove, from Devil's Dyke to the Palace Pier.
