I was glad to be an organiser and participant in the World Naked Bike Ride last Saturday, in the morning in Brighton and the afternoon in London's West End.
The ride tried to draw attention both to the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and the oil-free advantages of cycling as a means of transport.
The naked aspect created an event which was a peaceful and humorous celebration of the human body.
The events in both Brighton and London took place with the help of the police - the result of careful planning and effort on all sides.
However, there was one bizarre difference - where the Metropolitan Police were happy to allow nudity (itself, not a crime), Chief Supt Jeremy Paine saw fit to invoke the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act to prevent nudity in Brighton.
It is a great shame Brighton's enviable reputation as the home of tolerance, diversity and creative expression should be spoiled by a single policeman (who does not even live in Brighton).
The World Naked Bike Ride is organised but it is not an organised crime. Surely Brighton deserves police leadership which is more in touch with the city it serves?
