Andy Hancock asserts it is jet engines which are responsible for global warming (Letters, June 12).

While they do need to be taken into account, they are clearly not the whole problem.

After 9/11, all planes in US airspace were grounded and the average temperature across the US went up by a degree and a half, demonstrating, if nothing else, that aeroengines are responsible for contributing to a dimming effect.

Be that as it may, global warming is still apparent.

Standing at Universal Studios above Los Angeles, or Epsom Downs overlooking London, there is a very noticeable brown smog layer in the atmosphere directly above the cities - not unlike the close-up pictures of Venus, but its global warming could melt lead.

Vehicle exhausts are much more likely culprits for this smog than aeroplanes.
