Illegal flyposters promoting a show by a reggae star accused of homophobia are being taken down.
Brighton and Hove City Council leader Simon Burgess said the posters for a gig by Buju Banton, a Jamaican star who once wrote lyrics about killing gay people, had been put up illegally.
Green councillor Simon Williams wants the Concorde 2, on Madeira Drive, Brighton, to cancel the musician's gig on July 5.
Coun Burgess said the posters had been illegally flyposted on some seafront council sites. He said: "Our contractor will paste over them with legitimate posters from event organisers who have hired the sites from us.
"The council will not always know whether an artist has offensive lyrics but when we do we would not allow our poster sites to be used.
"Hate and discrimination are completely unacceptable."
The song that generated furore from gay rights groups, Boom Bye Bye, was written in 1992 and Banton has since written songs condemning the violence in Jamaican dancehall music.
But according to gay rights group Outrage! Buju played Boom Bye Bye at a concert in Jamaica as recently as last year and refused to apologise for the lyrics in April this year, citing his Rastafarian religion as the basis for his beliefs.
