I am pleased to hear the ban on primate experiments is not to be lifted. However, I am very concerned the chief executive of the Medical Research Council, Colin Blakemore, should even contemplate lifting the ban.

Animal testing has been shown to be scientifically unreliable and the large majority of GPs are against it. Even chimpanzees, our closest relatives with 99 per cent shared DNA, react differently to products such as AIDS vaccines.

Large amounts of money are being wasted on unscientific research.
