Martha Wainwright's all-acoustic set at The Gardner Centre on Friday could have melted the stoniest of hearts.
Everything was going against her. The amplifiers didn't work at the start, then kicked into life with an electric burp. She was suffering from a heavy cold and had to blow her nose on stage.
But she was fabulous.
Armed with just an acoustic guitar and her emotional, husky, versatile voice, she created beautiful soundscapes that none of today's pop wannabes could come close to.
During her last tequila-fuelled performance at Brighton Dome a month ago she chipped a tooth on the microphone. Her performance on Friday was every bit as exuberant and passionate.
She was flawless when performing Factory, TV Show, This Life and another song that cannot be named in a family newspaper, but These Flowers was the show's crowning glory.
