When Brighton and Hove City Council sits down to decide whether or not to build a refuse transfer station in Hollingdean, I hope it will stop and re-think the whole idea of sending our waste to be burned inefficiently in another community.
We should make the most of this rich resource, which means getting more value out of it and doing it here.
It is perfectly possible to build a plant which would turn the organic part of our rubbish into fuel and heat for local use. The Hollingdean depot is ideally placed for such a plant, with its long history of waste handling.
Local flats and schools could receive the heating and hot water generated.
There are many other exciting technologies which are available for processing waste, too. We must explore them and adopt the best so we can become a real "Environmental City", leading the way in sustainability.
