I have just received a letter from Simon Burgess, the new leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, outlining his support for the proposed dump in Hollingdean.
His arguments, listed below, are the same as have been used to support this proposal from the start. It is a brownfield site Well, it was designated as such by the Victorians when it was on the edge of town.
But now it is at the heart of a residential area, adjacent to accommodation for older and/or more disabled residents and next to an infants school.
It is next to the CityClean fleet Move the fleet and use the site for regeneration and job creation. The vehicles used by Veolia will be required to produce the lowest possible emissions But they will go under a narrow railway bridge in an area designated as having higher than acceptable air pollution already.
They will thus slow down and at several times halt existing traffic, thus creating a radical increase in pollution.
It is about recycling We all support that but there are better ways to support recycling than this. And it is linked to incineration. Incinerators need huge amounts of waste to be profitable for the private companies running them, which is why they often buy in additional waste.
So a new leader but no new ideas.
