I was pleased the Mayor of Brighton came on our walking bus on Monday. His presence helped Brighton and Hove City Council promote walk-to-school week and acknowledged the hard work of our walking bus volunteers.
Your article (The Argus, May 23) suggested it is school staff who accompany the children to school each day to reduce car use in our community.
Not so. Our walking bus has been going for four years on parent power. Lynne and Matt Mohns, Sue Lawday, Lee Pepper, myself and Lisa Corner run the walking bus.
And what a fabulous bunch we are, not only prepared to walk our own children in all weathers, but to take responsibility for other people's children as well.
We're proud the Mayor took time out of his busy schedule to walk the talk with us but mostly we're proud of having clocked up more than 2,000 volunteer hours on the bus, which has saved more than 20,000 individual car journeys to the school.
-Marina Pepper, chair, Lewes District Council and daily walking bus volunteer
