After Trevor Nunn's Cosi on board an ocean liner, Graham Vick's "white box" version and most recently Glyndebourne Education's hip-hop interpretation, a firmly traditional version comes to Glyndebourne and it is a triumphant success.
Mozart's most sublime opera tells of two young men who take a bet that their girlfriends will remain faithful while the boys are away at war. Former National Theatre boss Nicholas Hytner comes to Glyndebourne to direct his first opera in Britain in ten years.
His gift is to leave Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo Dar Ponte to tell the tale, content himself with casting six fine singers and masterminding exquisite Mediterranean lighting from Paule Constable and a great set from his designer Vicki Mortimer.
The singing is utterly compelling, with Swedish soprano Miah Persson, following her recent success at the Royal Opera House in the Marriage of Figaro, in the role of Fiordiligi. She is ably matched by German mezzo-soprano Anke Vondung as Dorabella. Finnish tenor Topi Lehtippuu is a splendid Ferrando and Italian baritone Luca Pisarroni as Guglielmo.
Ivan Fischer, who cut his teeth on Mozart with the late, lamented Kent Opera, gets a magical sound from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
