During a visit to Brighton for the festival, we visited the old police station under the town hall.
The tour guide was very good and the reconstruction of the cells excellent. However, the conditions for the rest of the tour were much less pleasant. It was filthy - a building site. Would it take too much to clean the old toilets and store rooms and show how they would have been?
The uniform room and the infamous fireplace where Henry Solomon was murdered were very disappointing - even the plaster is falling off the walls.
And what is all the paperwork still stored there? Is there history rotting away?
This old piece of Brighton could be made to appeal to a wider audience (there were five in our tour) with possibly a small charge being made.
On the upside, we would recommend the tour of the air raid shelter at Whitehawk School.
It was absolutely fascinating.
