Brazil is known to like to shake it but, aside from the lambada and bossa nova, there hasn't been much new stuff for the international dance floor that we knew of - until now.

The northern emergence of baile funk has been led by Floridian DJ Diplo - think Miami bass sound with Latin percussion and a whole lot of booty shakin'.

Wes Pentz, aka Diplo, was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. While bored working in his father's bait shop, he channelled his energies into music and film.

When he sent some beat doodles he had been working on to the label Big Dada, he was promptly signed and moved to Philadelphia where he and another DJ, Low Budget, began their now-legendary Hollertronix sessions.

The Hollertronix mix CD, Never Scared, followed and later in the year Epistemology Suite EP became his first release for Big Dada.

Then came debut album Florida and since then, Diplo has toured with Prefuse 73, RJD2, Roots Manuva and M.I.A, performed in Brazil, Japan and China, released the mix CDs Favela On Blast, AEIOU, M.I.A.'s Piracy Funds Terrorism and Hollertronix 2, has remixed for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party, Gwen Stefani, Le Tigre and DJ Shadow. He also writes a regular Dirty South column for Hip Hop Connection mag.

On Monday, Diplo will be joined by his very own discovery, Bonde Do Role. The three members of Bonde Do Role - meaning The Rollercoaster Band - DJ/MC Rodrigo Gorky, MC Marina Ribatski and MC Pedro D'eyrot, were discovered by Diplo during a visit to Brazil. Their unique sound is defined by their random samples and gleeful pillaging of American pop culture, fused with the baile funk/funk carioca style of the region.

As the first release from Diplo's own record label, Mad Decent, Bonde Do Role's Melo Do Tabaco EP serves as a sort of mission statement. Diplo sees Mad Decent as a label that will release new music from all over the world, as well as bootleg and remix records: "Certainly, Bonde Do Role fulfils the international requirement, and as far as the music goes, well, they're definitely the first carioca group to sample Alice In Chains - and make it sound good," he says.
