The 2020 Soundsystem are among the ever-increasing new wave of acts mixing up electronic music with indie, punk and funk - or e-funk, as some have labeled it.
The collective have established themselves firmly in the festival circuit, as well as building up their reputation in the world of underground clubs and dirty discos.
2020 Soundsystem was started as a new way of playing live by Ralph Lawson, original DJ at the legendary Back To Basics club in Leeds and Danny "Dubble D" Ward.
Tired of the club scene, they sought to find a different way to entertain and excite. By weaving live instruments into Lawson's DJ sets they created something new by giving punters the best of both worlds - the continuity and diversity of a DJ mix with the raw energy and excitement of seeing a live band.
The project became four when bass player and vocalist Fernando Pulichino and Julian "Keys" Sanza, recent arrivals from Argentina, sent 2020 a demo under their Silver City moniker.
For the uninitiated, could you introduce yourself?
I am Ralph Lawson. I DJ and mix the band using all kinds of fancy gadgets. We also work with Diane Charlemagne and Dominique from The Glass on vocals.
What is your biggest inspiration?
We are quite different musically but I reckon New Order, The Clash, Talking Heads, Yello, Miles Davis, Parliament and George Clinton, White Stripes, Adonis, Derrick May, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mr Fingers and Carl Craig would be a good overview.
What's the greatest band you've ever witnessed?
I thought Goldfrapp were the best-sounding band I ever heard this year actually. Otherwise we are off to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers in July and I would give my right arm to see The White Stripes. Amp Fiddler also really blew me away.
A tune guaranteed to get you on the dancefloor?
New Order, Blue Monday.
Are there any types of music you really don't like?
Most of the current Pop Idol rubbish, boy band ballads, most country and western (although I recently got into Johnny Cash), anything that Judge Jules plays.
The pinnacle of your career so far?
Sonar 2005. Their set is recorded and on the album. Great moments.
