Slowly and expensively, Brighton and Hove City Council will improve the area around Palmeira Square's Floral Clock, especially if they tackle the landgull and pigeon infestation.
But what about the other end of Church Road? As recently as five years ago, this had many offices providing both direct employment and trade from office workers going into local shops.
Now, the resident-friendly parking schemes have driven out offices and shops and you can't see the buildings for the To Let signs.
In addition, road closures for the benefit of Tesco (Vallance Road) and Karis (Connaught Road) have created a bottleneck at the traffic lights so the area is as clogged as it ever was.
Similar problems can be seen all the way to Palmeira Square. It is time for a re-think and a more friendly approach to the remaining offices and shops. Or a planning decision to allow the conversion of the whole of Church Road to residential properties.
