This production may be loosely based on a tale from ancient Greek mythology but any similarities to traditional theatre end there.
Artistic director Bill Mitchell has more than three decades of experience in experimental theatre, most recently as the man behind the highly acclaimed A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings.
This hotly-anticipated follow-up is again a site-specific piece, fusing street theatre, music and storytelling to recount the tale of Orpheus' journey into the underworld to find his lover, Eurydice.
"I still don't have quite the right word for it," says Mitchell. "The nearest I've got is 'landscape theatre'. It's theatre but not in a conventional space or with a conventional audience.
"In a normal theatre or opera version of this story," he continues, "the audience sits and watches Orpheus going into the underworld. But here, the audience actually makes the journey itself, moving through four or five different locations during the evening."
Further helping the atmosphere is the exotic live soundtrack, while Bill guarantees to cater for touch and smell, too. As he declares: "This is not conventional theatre - it's a truly sensual experience of the underworld!"
Be warned that Souterrain is recommended for adults and "brave children" only - there's no nudity or profanity but Bill points out that he wouldn't be doing his job properly if the underworld wasn't a little scary.
Those who do attend are advised to wear warm clothes and sturdy shoes.
Starts: 8.30pm. Tickets: £12.50, children £8, family ticket (two adults, two children) £35. Must be purchased in advance. Sponsored by Christopher Gull
