Folky singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez almost went unnoticed as he walked on stage at the Dome.

There was a tense moment where it seemed nobody in the packed hall cared he had come on. But once he smiled and waved they realised he was the main attraction, not another roadie.

His set was proof sometimes less is more. It was just him, sitting behind a microphone with his incredible voice and a Spanish guitar, accompanied on a few songs by a backing singer with a pair of bongos and a percussionist.

Yet the music had depth and emotion sadly lacking in most modern music. He put in a flawless performance on Heartbeats and Stay In The Shade from last year's album Veneer.

The 27-year-old Swede's vocals ranged from almost-indecipherable murmurs reminiscent of Nick Drake to pitchperfect crescendos, demonstrated in a cover of Massive Attack's Teardrop.

Bizarrely, he also covered Kylie Minogue's Hand On Your Heart, successfully turning it from a bubblegum pop classic to a heart-wrenching plea to a departing lover.

He seemed genuinely pleased and surprised at the warm applause each song drew and cries of "we love you Jose" left him baffled but happy.
