Adam Shields today vowed a sickening smash in Poland will NOT end his season.
The Eastbourne Eagles speedway star suffered a broken pelvis and damage to hip and knee when he skidded into a fence on Monday.
Initial reports suggested his promising 2006 campaign was over.
But, speaking from his hospital bed for tonight's Sports Argus, he said: "I will be back as soon as I possibly can.
"Fortunately it's not quite as bad as I first thought.
"I shouldn't need an operation but a few weeks of rest and, hopefully, it will come good.
"I'll be able to put some weight on my foot and, hopefully, after that it won't be too long until I get on a bike.
"I miss riding my bike already and this isn't going to put me off doing that."
Shields missed Eagles' emphatic 60-32 triumph against lowly Oxford Cheetahs in Elite League action at Arlington last night.
