The cello, like the guitar, is the musical instrument closest in range to the human voice.
It can purr like Leslie Phillips or shriek like Barbara Windsor and, in the hands of a master such as Ivan Hussey Celloman it can hit all points between.
I had never seen an electric cello before but, in a set made up mostly of tracks from his forthcoming album and encompassing styles from around the world, Hussey showed what it could do leading a band formed of drums, Latin percussion, a bass and an electric violin.
Despite Husseys singing, it seemed they were waiting for a proper vocalist, an impression reinforced when a strong female voice appeared in the backing track.
The cello soars, sweeps and sings but it cant replace a good vocal.
Nevertheless, the audience danced and had a good time. I look forward to the album.
