Albion face a battle to keep Gifton Noel-Williams beyond the end of the season.
The relegation-bound Seagulls' new striker says his future at the moment is still with parent club Burnley.
Noel-Williams joined Albion on loan last week for the rest of the Championship campaign.
The former Watford and Stoke target man, who scored on his debut in Saturday's 1-1 home draw against Luton, said: "I'm still contracted to Burnley.
"I've got a year left on my contract so at the end of the season I'll go back and me and my advisers and the manager (Steve Cotterill) will sit down and think about what's going to happen for next season.
"As it stands now my future is with Burnley. As far as the gaffer is concerned I'm here on loan, not on loan with a view to a permanent move. I'll just take it one step at a time.
"I'm not going to say I want to move clubs or not move clubs.
"I'll see out this loan spell, hopefully if it goes well, then we can sit down in the summer and talk. Whatever happens is out of my hands."
Albion manager Mark McGhee believes a profitable loan spell for Noel-Williams could help persuade the 26-year-old Londoner to move back south.
"He doesn't know Brighton as a place or a club," McGhee said. "I think he'll like Brighton as a place, as most people that come here do.
"From that point of view, if he is going to be leaving Burnley in the summer then I would suspect he would quite enjoy coming to Brighton.
"We hope he is someone that is going to prove to us, no matter what happens at the end of the season, that he is worth having here, so there is a big incentive for him as well."
Meanwhile, Paul Reid is back in contention for Saturday's trip to fellow strugglers Millwall.
The versatile Australian, out of the starting line-up since last month's home defeat by Leicester, scored twice from midfield in the second half for the Reserves in a 4-0 romp at Gillingham yesterday.
Coach Dean White said: "Reidy got forward quite a bit and did really well. I think he has definitely put himself back in the frame for Saturday."
Kerry Mayo opened the scoring and Federico Turienzo doubled the lead before half-time, finishing off a cross from the fit-again Doug Loft.
Albion Reserves: Chaigneau; Dodd, Elphick, El-Abd, Mayo; Robinson, Nicolas (Fraser), Reid, Loft; Turienzo (Cox), Gatting (Rents). Unused subs: Jarrett, Martin.
