Albion manager Mark McGhee admitted today it will "take something astonishing" to save his side from the drop.
A debut goal for Gifton Noel-Williams in Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Luton was overshadowed by shock away wins for Sheffield Wednesday at Wolves and Millwall at Watford.
Albion go to McGhee's old club Millwall on Saturday four points behind them and nine adrift of safety with only six games left.
McGhee said: "Other results were a kick in the teeth, You'll always hear me say as long as there are enough points then of course it's not impossible.
"It's not impossible for any team to win six games in a row it happens all the time in many leagues. It looks unlikely at the moment but with Gifton here who knows?
"We may go and win six games but I think it's going to take something astonishing like that for us to stay up. We're in the must-win zone.
"Our task staying up was very difficult from the first day of the season. We were expected to be where we are.
"We hoped we could maybe do better than that but we've been limited in the changes and improvements we've been able to make.
"Going now nine points behind Sheffield Wednesday, we have got to say we still have a chance because we play them but we know we have got to start winning games.
"We must be rank outsiders but we are not going to give it up. The spirit and determination to keep going will continue to be there."
McGhee was encouraged by the immediate impact made by Noel-Williams, signed on loan from Burnley for the rest of the season.
He said: "I was pleased with his performance. He looked at the end like he needed the game but he is the type of player we've needed for some time.
"I wish we'd had him here earlier. Obviously we weren't able to but I think he will improve us."
Teenage midfielder Doug Loft could still play a part in the run-in after further checks revealed he did not break a bone in his left leg playing for the reserves at Millwall last week.
