Parents are celebrating a small reprieve after a school agreed to continue providing holiday care this Easter.

Downs Junior School in Brighton agreed to continue its club Action Station throughout the school holiday despite the fact the firm's contract expires on March 31.

The school in Rugby Road has been allocated £600,000 by Brighton and Hove City Council to demolish its outdated canteen, where Action Station is based, and build a new one.

But parents were annoyed with the short notice, the lack of interim provision and the layout of the new canteen, which will mean fewer children can attend.

Currently about 50 children attend each day but the new canteen will only accommodate 30.

Julie Cattell, whose children have used Action Station for the last four years, said: "I'm pleased the school has reconsidered and we now have some cover at Easter but it is too little, too late."

Building work is expected to begin in May, subject to planning permission, and be finished by autumn.

Brenda Pollack, whose son Ben, seven, goes to the club, said: "We haven't been consulted on this at all. It seems ridiculous they will reduce the number of places available when the Government keeps going on about helping working parents."

Parents will meet with school and council staff on Monday to discuss the changes.

A council spokesman said parents could make use of other after-school clubs but there was no space to accommodate the club.
