I'd be interested to see the letter from English Heritage, which Richard Coleman of Hove Up refers to (Letters, February 23), concerning the King Alfred development of hundreds of flats currently being proposed.
As a regular user of the promenade, beach and existing facilities, I can't agree that the site and its environs need a fundamental lift, when all it needs is a better sports centre.
I further disagree that there is little in the way of heritage assets near the site. If the beautiful, clear coastline isn't heritage, what is?
Places with a sense of peace, freedom and access for all are a more precious resource now than they've ever been.
Ask the many strollers, joggers, dog-walkers, visitors, families and fresh-air fiends who flock there from all over the city and country to enjoy those very qualities.
Local residents are instead having to fight to prevent an enormous architectural mistake being foisted on Brighton and Hove.
