Following the recent announcement the Royal Mail was to be fined for lost mail and missed targets, I wonder exactly how big the problem is.
I receive and send an average amount of mail but since January 1 one package to the Netherlands has gone astray, as has a cheque and an order for travel tickets.
A CD-rom I ordered is still on its way 14 days after first-class posting, as is a letter sent to me from Denton a month ago.
Letters and cheques which aren't claimed for will go unreported. This is the case with the Netherlands package, as it is the recipient who must claim for an international loss.
The supplier will replace my CDrom and probably won't claim either, so four cases in one household go unreported and don't make the statistics, which are already at an alarming level.
It is reaching the stage at which I get proof of posting for anything I send which is of consequence. But this means a trip to a Post Office for just one letter.
