David Taylor asks why Brighton and Hove City Council appears to be obsessed with LGBT issues (Letters, January 17).
There are about 35,000 LGBT people in the city; many are subject to discrimination and acts of verbal and physical abuse; and the LGBT community adds colour and vibrancy to the city and makes a major contribution to the economy.
That's three reasons. Want any more? He also states he is not homophobic. Sadly, that is not what comes across in his letter.
Here is a simple test. As a gay man I would be amused, not upset, if I were assumed to be and treated as if I were straight. I might, however, ask the person concerned if they had been to the optician recently.
If Mr Taylor were assumed to be and treated as if he were gay, would he be amused or upset?
If the latter, he might need to examine why and explore and confront any prejudices such a selfexamination might reveal.
