Simon Burgess has been crowned leader of Brighton and Hove City Council.
The 41-year-old father-of-two, who was elected leader of the Labour group earlier this month, was backed unanimously by members of all political parties at yesterdays council meeting at Brighton Town Hall.
Coun Burgess, who was first elected to the council ten years ago, will continue his duties as finance spokesman, responsible for an annual budget of almost £200 million.
In his acceptance speech he paid tribute to the "vision" of his predecessor, Ken Bodfish, who last month announced his resignation from the top job after six years.
Coun Burgess said: "Ken had the vision and determination to bring a more sustainable future to this city - environmentally and economically. He has, at times, been a controversial figure, but by being one he will leave a lasting legacy."
Thanking councillors for their support, Coun Burgess said his priority would be securing a good deal for taxpayers and pledged to tackle discrimination in the city.
