Unbelievably, minimal is back and maximal isn't.
Or rather, it is, but just not as much as it was. "Techno of a maximinimal persuasion" is how Bleeps confusingly describes its sound.
The stripped, unashamedly electronic sound, which hails from our German bretheren, is proving popular over here.
Bleeps, a "loose collective of Brighton DJs and promoters" which is leading the minimal charge on the South Coast, helping it "take over the world's finest clubs".
Despite the reduced sound, Bleeps are keen to maximise the genre's exposure, with two nights, one at Sumo and the other, involving one of the genre's leading proponents, Magda, at the Ocean Rooms.
Linked with the Minus and run/stop restore labels and the all-women DJ collective, Women on Wax, the DJ-cum-producer's sound has been described as "humanity in circuitry, giving her sets a certain soul not readily found in the average techno DJ".
At either the Ocean Rooms or Sumo every Saturday you can expect to hear the likes of the melodious Booker Shade, the in-your-face electro of Trentemoller, the trancey Matthew Johnson and the progressive Richie Hawtin.
If you still know your minimal from your maximal after that, you must still be sober. As Bleeps' spokesperson advises: "Expect a seriously minimalicious experience".
