Whatever the outcome of the forthcoming debate on Per Lindstrand's plans for a HiFlyer balloon to be based in Brighton's Victoria Gardens - an idea I welcome as likely to prove at least as popular with residents and tourists as the London Eye - Miriam Wells' frontpage report (The Argus, February 15) makes me wonder if Dr Lindstrand's innovative proposal could be adapted slightly for use at Beachy Head.
In light of an earlier article about a campaign to have a 24-hour watch monitoring Beachy Head (The Argus, September 1, 2005), would it be possible for a similar Civil Aviation Authoritycertified HiFlyer balloon to be stationed at Beachy Head?
It could be used, full or part-time, by, among others, a spotter equipped with night-vision binoculars, who could alert the chaplaincy patrol on the ground to anyone behaving suspiciously.
Such an vantage point could fulfil a dual purpose, providing pleasurable views for visitors and an opportunity for the area's chaplains and counsellors to receive early warnings if someone appears to be at risk of self-harm or likely to commit suicide.
