At last it seems the derelict land at Black Rock is to be developed as an ice-skating arena. Might the Brighton Tigers ice hockey team, or its equivalent, return there?
When several proposals were originally drawn up for this site, one of them included the possible extension of Volks Railway to Brighton Marina.
When Magnus Volk extended his railway as far as Black Rock in 1901, passengers journeyed from the Palace Pier, alighting at spectacular views of cliffs and rock pools.
Black Rock open-air swimming pool, built in 1939, gave visitors another reason to travel on the line. With the pool's closure in 1978 and, more recently, the shortening of the eastern end of the line, there was less reason to use the railway.
Hopefully, the development of children's and sports facilities at Peter Pan's playground, halfway along Madeira Drive, will stimulate use of the Volks.
Now would be an ideal time to lengthen the railway eastwards, perhaps terminating at the east end of Undercliff Walk.
