M Sihvonen's excellent letter (February 15) sadly understates the seriousness of John Prescott forcing huge tower-block developments upon Brighton and Hove after they've been rejected by Brighton and Hove City Council.

This has recently happened with two massive high-rise schemes in London. The first, at Vauxhall, was rejected by Lambeth council, appealed by the developer and approved by Prescott. The other, at Lotts Road, Chelsea, was rejected by Kensington and Chelsea council, appealed by the developer and approved by Prescott. Is this democracy?

Developments such as the one the council rejected at Brighton Marina and the one proposed for the King Alfred site, still under consideration by the planning department, will have a seismic impact upon our city. These must be decided locally, by elected people who live here and, therefore, have a stake in the city's quality of life and future.

If Mr Prescott arrogantly chooses to override our council and force the towers at the marina and the King Alfred on us, a previously pro-Labour local majority will remember his actions come the elections.
