Using a combination of film, music and spoken word, Northern Stage's unique style of storytelling brings Charles Dickens' literary masterpiece vividly to life.
The renowned stage company dug deep into the author's past and discovered Estella, the cruel but beautiful heroine, was based on Newcastle actress Nelly Ternan, with whom he had a long, secret affair.
This production explores Dickens' relationship with the North-East, transporting the eerie marshes of Essex to the brooding moors of the Northumberland coast. With a cast of 11 and nightmarish sets and costumes, this production gets to the Gothic heart of the tale.
