Desperate to avoid endless trips to employment centres, one job hunter has taken the unusual step of putting himself up for auction on the internet.

Nick Feather, 29, will sell himself to the highest bidder for two weeks to carry out whatever his new employer asks of him. No job will be too big, too small or too unpleasant, so long as it is legal and the price is right.

Mr Feather, who has been without work for two weeks, said: "I didn't want to follow the usual route of buying the local paper each week and filing out hundreds of application forms. I thought this was a different way of doing a CV.

"It's more proactive and still shows my skills in web design and communication."

Mr Feather has spent the last few years in temping jobs, web marketing and as a social worker.

He was inspired for his latest career move by the Million Dollar Homepage website where British student Alex Tew sold off one million pixels of advertising space for $1 (60p)

each to fund his way through Nottingham University.

Companies bidding for Mr Feather also get advertising benefits as they are listed on his website called Maximum Wage at www.15mins.org and have a link to their own company's website. Mr Feather, who lives just off Lewes Road, said he was prepared to do almost anything for his employer, although he hoped to get work in web design and marketing.

He said: "I could end up cleaning toilets if that's what they ask me to do and they are paying the most money. That's the fun thing about it, I have no idea what I will be doing."

Mr Feather launched the website last week and has already had six offers of work.

Yesterday the highest bidder was video conferencing provider Eyenetwork, which has offered Mr Feather £400.

Other companies include BMN Catering and web design agency Nixon McInnes.

Mr Feather said he will close bids on March 15 and donate half his pay cheque to The Clock Tower Sanctuary for homeless people in Dyke Road.

He said: "This is an experiment and will definitely be a one-off. It's great that I've had several bids already. Hopefully it will raise a bit of interest and I will end up with a full-time job."

Mr Feather studied Architecture at De Montfort University and has a background in media and marketing.
