DEMANDS to improve an increasingly notorious road have grown after a second death in the space of 13 days.

Residents have reacted with anger and dismay after a 50-year-old woman was killed on Valentine's Day - 400 metres from the scene of a hit-and-run death on February 2.

The latest victim of an accident on the A259 on Tuesday was last night named as Wendy Seabrook, of Beach Green, Shoreham.

She was crossing the road when she was hit by a silver VW Golf on the A259 Brighton Road in Shoreham about 6pm.

Flowers were placed at the scene of the tragedy yesterday.

One card said: "To our dearest Wendy, To be taken from our lives on such a loving day. You will always be in our hearts and thoughts."

Another read: "Darling Wendy, Such a special person. You will be forever missed. All our love Phillip, Sam, Elliot and Oscar."

A third said: "Wendy, Taken too soon. Our special friend!

Merrina and Michael."

The 35 year-old driver of the VW Golf, was said by friends to be "incredibly shaken up" by the incident. The man, who comes from Worthing, had been travelling westbound when the crash happened.

Claire Lambley, from Brighton Road, was among those calling for safety measures.

She said: "They really have got to do something about the road now. It has gone too far and too many people are getting killed or injured.

"I don't know whether they need speed cameras, more crossings or a lower limit but something just has to be done."

Reggie Smith from Brighton Road said: "There is no way they can ignore two crashes in such a short space of time. The road has to be changed."

West Sussex County Council said it will wait for the results of an investigation into the death of 30 year-old Michelle Dever, who was killed by a hit-and-run driver days earlier, before committing to changes.

Friends and family of Miss Dever have also demanded "whatever it takes" to improve the road.
