Friends and family campaigning for the release of Guantanamo detainee Omar Deghayes have given a cautious welcome to the release of a fellow inmate.

Popular pressure and efforts by lawyer Clive Stafford-Smith, who also represents Mr Deghayes, have secured the release of Jamal Kiyemba, a 25-year-old man who has lived in Britain since the age of 14.

Mr Kiyemba is a Ugandan refugee whose family are all British citizens. He was captured in Pakistan and taken to Guantanamo Bay in 2002 Mr Deghayes, a Libyan refugee, lived in Saltdean and his family are all British citizens. He was also captured in Pakistan and taken to Guantanamo Bay in 2002.

Campaigners for Mr Deghayes were given fresh hope when the American authorities set Mr Kiyembe free because of the similarities between the two cases.

However, when the release was announced, Home Secretary Charles Clarke banned Mr Kiyemba from coming to the UK on grounds of national security and he was returned to Uganda.

Mr Deghayes family are fearful of what will happen to Mr Deghayes if he is returned to Libya as their father was assassinated there for his political beliefs.

His lawyer said Libyans had visited Mr Deghayes inside the jail and threatened to kill him if he ever returned to the country.

Mr Stafford-Smith said: "We are extremely troubled that the Home Secretary has simply banned Jamal from coming back in without talking to us at all."

Leading Omar campaigner Jackie Chase, 48, of Grantham Road, Brighton, said: "This just makes us more determined."
