Andy Yates' report on commemorative plaques (The Argus, February 3) will encourage everyone who is interested in local history.
Immediate attention should be given to those plaques already placed but in a shoddy state. One is that on 5 Percival Place, Kemp Town, the last home of Herbert Spencer.
A celebrated scientist and philosopher, Herbert Spencer was often referred to as "a Darwinian before Darwin". He deserves better than the deplorable eyesore which commemorates his residence in Brighton.
