C Stenning's insecurities about Councillor Williams' ideas for developing St James's Street (Letters, January 30) are unfounded.
I have lived in the area for ten years and, like it or not, the growing cluster of gay businesses is already becoming an unofficial gay village.
The proposal is to enhance the street architecture and to improve the security of St James's Street for everyone, while drawing on the colour and vibrancy of the area's large lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
There would be no official branding or signage designating the area as a gay village.
A good comparison would be London's Chinatown. Non-Chinese residents share the benefits of investment, which enhances the character and reputation of the area, and reduces anti-social behaviour.
C Stenning acknowledges LGBT people are already more vulnerable to attack but then, callously, wants to deny us extra protection.
Finally, his prudish remarks about Pride are way off the mark.
My two-year-old son loves the fun and excitement. As a teacher, I regularly see schoolkids and their parents enjoying the parade and all the fun of the fair.
