Has Councillor Juliet McCaffery, deputy chair of Brighton and Hove Council's Children, Families and Schools, misunderstood the debate entirely?
In her letter (February 2), she states distance is the fairest way to decide school admissions - and so it would be if the schools were conveniently spread out across the city.
The reality is two schools are located in the same place (Dorothy Stringer and Varndean) while an area from The King Alfred to Seven Dials and Queens Park and back to the Marina has no schools at all.
The whole point of moving the nodes for admissions purposes was to make the distance criteria fairer.
Now, in Seven Dials, we will once again be faced with the lottery of which secondary school to put first, knowing if we guess wrong we'll be shipped out to Patcham or Falmer.
That is not the best way and it's frightening that, following this whole process, Councillor McCaffery can't grasp that fact.
