Basement Soul is taking over the Friday slot at the Jazz Place formerly filled by The Jazz Rooms.
The night will specialise in broken beat, disco, hip-hop and future soul, with a few heavyweight Sixties and Seventies gems thrown in when the moment is right.
Mr Bongo's Graham Luckhurst was inspired to start the club after trips to London's Co-Op and Messin' Around nights. "It will be proper music for the heads, hips and feet, futureproof soulful dance music," he says.
"We're adopting a more open DJ policy whereby carefully selected people with records which need to be played loud will be able to dig them out and get involved, without an official slot. This is intended to keep the night consistently fresh, spontaneous and varied."
Residents will be Greymatter (Unique Uncut/Mr Bongo Records), Amar Patel (Straight No Chaser) and Simon See, with regular Brighton-based guests and a few slightly bigger names in the mix.
"The aim of this night is to create a sociable atmosphere for people to hear and to dance - inspiring music of real substance without the usual bollocks," Graham continues.
"Anyone tired of ubiquitous R'n'B, hard house, cheese and £15 hole-in-the-pocket nights should step this way. It's all about dancing."
