Worthing progressed to the fourth round of the Ryman League's Westview Cup after beating Walton and Hersham 5-4 on penalties.

Richard Pacquette put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot and Matt Russell made it 2-0 at half-time.

The visitors rallied to score twice in the second half to take the game to extra-time, although Pacquette and Roy Pook both hit the woodwork before the 90 minutes were up.

In the penalty shoot-out, Danny Davis put Worthing 5-4 up as it went to sudden death before young Rebels keeper Dave Leaver made his second save of the night to ensure victory.

A spirited performance could not prevent Hastings United from sliding out of the Westview Cup.

A youthful and much-changed Hastings side was beaten 3-2 at the hands of premier division Braintree Town at the Pilot Field.

But the home side came close to pulling off a remarkable comeback when they scored two goals in the final ten minutes.

Doug Loft put them on the scoresheet with a 25-yard left-foot shot into the top corner on 80 minutes and Ben White slotted home a free-kick in the first minute of stoppage time to set up an exciting finish. Ade Olorunda headed just wide from a White free kick in the dying seconds.

Braintree had earlier opened up a three-goal lead through Louis Riddle (13), Eugene Ofori (46) and Chris Wild (57).

Joe Fernley scored an extra-time winner as Hassocks came from behind to beat Ringmer 2-1 in the Sussex RUR Cup.

Richard Thompson struck on 63 minutes to cancel out Dominic Shepherd's first-half opener for the visitors.

Worthing under-18s take on Brentford in the first round proper of the FA Youth Cup at Griffin Park tonight (7.30).
