Regarding the proposals for the revamping of New Road in Brighton, one of the reasons the Max Miller Appreciation Society agreed to site the statue of the nation's most popular music hall star there was because we were told the street would be improved as part of Brighton's new "cultural triangle".
It is good to see Brighton and Hove City Council is making good this undertaking.
However, some of our members have expressed concern about news that Max may be "on the move", so I would like to reassure them.
We have been involved in the New Road enhancement consultation under the chairmanship of Councillor Gill Mitchell and are confident Max will still be very much centre stage when changes are made.
We signed an agreement with the council which requires the society's agreement to any re-siting of Brighton's famous son.
We have now confirmed we are more than happy to discuss moving the statue. We will be flexible in our approach but we wish to ensure the statue does not move far from its current position and that the public are given an improved viewing area.
It should be visible to visitors, be properly landscaped - and suitably lit at night.
Our out-of-town members and other Max Miller enthusiasts visit the city to see the statue - so he's still contributing to the prosperity of Brighton and Hove and helping to keep it on the visitor map.
