There has been a great deal of misinformation with regard to the King Alfred proposals but Geoffrey Baker's image was one of the most unfair slurs against this scheme (The Argus, November 1).

This image is grossly distorted and drawn with too many floors.

The only view ever shown in an attempt to demonstrate how this scheme ruins the character of Hove is taken down this particular street.

That's because it's the only street of Victorian architecture anywhere near the King Alfred. Go and see for yourselves.

There are lots of tall 20th Century blocks of flats of very indifferent quality close to the site. They are the primary buildings which give this area its "character", along with a petrol station and a run-down sports complex.

Some facts are indisputable:

Gehry is a world-class architect and Brighton and Hove has no recent buildings by world-class architects (Bennett's library is pretty good though).

HOK are world-class sports architects (my children deserve high-quality sports facilities).

The scheme provides more affordable housing than the city gets from all other sites available in a typical year.

So really the debate only comes down to scale - go to the Town Hall, put your head down to the eye-level of the people on the model, then make up your mind. Don't be swayed by misleading images.
