I recently visited the Jubilee Library with my family and must say congratulations to Brighton and Hove's planning authority for approving the development of this fantastic building.
It has brought a vibrancy to the area and when I visited, the library was full and it was joy to see so many people of all ages making use of the excellent facilities.
While there, we also had a chance to see the plans for the development of the King Alfred site in Hove. While I agree that the current King Alfred site needs a re-think, I cannot see how the Gehry-designed flats will improve the area.
The odd-shaped flats just look wrong and out of place. I cannot see them growing on anyone over time - if anything, as time goes on and these flats weather, they will look even worse and remind one of those horrible council flats put together using concrete flat packs.
The height of the flats is also all wrong for the rest of the development - the flats should be no higher than the rest of the buildings in the development.
Like the new library, which fits in with the surrounding landscape, the new flats need to fit in with the surrounding area.
Having a designer label for the development is not important to me as a resident of Hove - what's important is that the skyline is not violently disturbed by any new development and I very much hope the planning authority will take this point on board.
