A TV appeal for witnesses has provided new leads for detectives investigating a shooting and a sex attack.

Police called in the BBC's Crimewatch UK television series to try and jog people's memories about an armed robbery and double shooting in Horsham in September.

A 6ft tall hooded gunman burst into Amore Jewellers, in Piries Place, the busy shopping precinct in Horsham, threatened staff and demanded they hand over jewellery.

Shop worker Darren Prior, 23, chased the robber as he fled the store with a haul of gems.

As Mr Prior gained ground, the robber stopped, turned around and fired a shot at him, missing by inches and sending shoppers diving for cover.

Mr Prior carried on chasing the robber into nearby Pump Alley, where he fired another round, hitting him in the chest.

The bullet, a modified 9mm blank cartridge, ended up lodged in the battery of Mr Prior's mobile phone.

The robber, who was black and wearing a black hooded top, escaped and is still at large.

The robbery took place at 4pm on Thursday, September 21.

Mr Prior is now back at work and putting the incident behind him.

Crimewatch UK researcher Ben Crichton said: "There was no breakthrough after the show, they're not going to pick up anyone immediately but there were some new leads.

"Horsham is not the type of place where you would expect this to happen and the fact they ran through the town centre when the schools were closing has shocked people."

Detective Inspector Steve Johns said: "We are encouraged by the public response to the feature on Crimewatch and are following up some very promising information."

Another appeal was put out for information about a sex attack in Brighton.

It provided new lines of inquiry, which the police are now following up.

A woman, aged 40, was approached in Queen's Park, on April 22 and was befriended by a man who told her he had been for a job interview.

She accepted an invitation for a drink at his home and got into his car.

She thought he lived in Brighton but they ended up at an address in Crawley, where she was raped.

The victim was found wandering the streets of Crawley in a distressed state early the next morning by a member of the public.

The offender is black, stocky, in his 30s, chubby with short black hair.

His car was new, silver coloured and possibly a Saab 93 convertible.
