Matt Jones believes competition for places can help East Grinstead climb the table.

Grinstead produced their best performance of the season to hold the mighty Reading to a 1-1 draw at Saint Hill last Sunday.

That result was achieved without Trinidad and Tobago international Dillet Gilkes, who was still recovering from injury.

There was also no place in the 16 for the likes of Duncan Howarth, Andy Medcalf, Seye Akande and Matt McNeill, who were regular squad members last season, while new German signing Jan Hebestreit is yet to figure following early season injury problems.

Mike Holland, almost an ever-present for the last few seasons, was on the bench against Reading but was not used.

Manager Jones said: "Everybody is vying for positions in the squad. The attitude in the changing room is very positive and vibrant because of that, which can only be good for us.

"Dillet is now fully fit and hopes to be back this weekend so we have real competition for places."

Grinstead take on Hampstead and Westminster under lights at Saint Hill tomorrow, with a 6.30pm start.

Jones said: "Hopefully there will be fireworks on and off the pitch. We produced a class performance against a class side last week and hopefully that has sent out a message to the rest of the league.

"We know Hampstead and Westminster will give us a tough match and we need to be mentally focused and driven."

Chris Choyce is hoping to be back in goal for Brighton and Hove at home to City of Portsmouth in South Premier division one.

Choyce suffered concussion and whiplash during a match away to Wimbledon last Saturday, causing the game to be abandoned while he sought hospital treatment.

Doctors have given him the all clear. Choyce was prevented from training this week but has been told he can play tomorrow providing he feels okay.

Player-coach Craig Carolan is also back in action after a hamstring problem, meaning Brighton should be at full strength.
