A flood watch was issued along the coast as strong winds and rain batter Sussex.
The Environment Agency made the alert for the county's coastline yesterday morning.
A flood watch means flooding of low-lying land and roads is expected and people should take care.
The highest possible alert is a severe flood warning, where there is extreme danger to life and property.
The Environment Agency said flooding could occur in Sussex if conditions worsen.
High water levels could lead to minor overtopping of flood defences so anyone driving or out near the coast should be especially careful.
Flood defence staff have been working to ensure coastal flood defences are in good condition.
The Environment Agency said it would continue to monitor the situation.
It did not expect things to escalate but warned people to be on their guard just in case.
It runs a 24-hour floodline on 0845 988 1188. Callers can receive local flood warning information or advice from an operator.
Flood warnings can also be seen by logging on to the Environment Agency's web site at www.environment-agency.gov.uk.
