The reversal of the fortunes of London Road's shopping street can only be saved by a radical proposal by Brighton and Hove City Council to re-develop the Open Market into a modern, undercover market - as is a feature of Midland towns and on the Continent.

This site and a lot of the property surrounding it is all owned by the council and therefore any plans and development would have a head start.

The closure of the fruit and flower market at Circus Street and its relocation to Hollingbury, Brighton, (mainly wholesale anyway) means there is a place in the city centre for an undercover, modern retail market.

This could be the jewel to attract other businesses into London Road.

It worked with Brighton seafront when Brighton and Hove City Council took the initiative and stopped a decline with a radical development - and I believe

it would work with London Road.
